Boys ~ When You’re Lonely

boyslonely.gif

Boys are from the city of Perth, Western Australia. They started out as a cover band playing mostly top 40 rock but then progressed into writing their own songs. Strangely, all the lyrics on there first album where written by their then manager and the Boys providing the backing tracks. When You’re Lonely was the first single released from their self titled album from 1980 which was well received in their hometown but not far beyond it. I will post more info on Boys in the future as there is more to tell. Meanwhile enjoy this piece of rock power pop that will have you singing along with the chorus in no time.

City: Perth

  1. This reminds me so muchof… yeah I can’t think of it right now.

  2. Hi, Love the info on ‘the boys’. Where can I buy it, brings back so many memories.

    Thanks, Brad.

  3. Thanks. I contacted the members about repressing the CD on my label but there seems to be a lot of bad blood between someone and it’s almost impossible to get anyone to make sense of all the problems. It may never be released again so I decided on posting it here.

    • I believe it is between The Del Rio brothers and Paul McCarthy.

I used to play in the same band with Paul McCarth ( Cut n Run / The lowdogs ) we used to play at the Old Melbourne in Perth.

Paul was very bitter about rpyalties or payment of some sort.

He was very talented as a writer. The guitarists from the boys were unbelievable, and I used to know these guys back in the 80’s. What an awesome time…

  4. I used to listen to this band when I was younger, would love some info on where to purchase their album.

  5. this is so damn great. many thanks!

  6. Well what can I say!!!, finally I have a copy of a song that I had on 45 till someone nicked it!!!, yes I bought this bands song on vinyl in 1980.
Thank you oh thank you. they don’t write them like that anymore.
Brings back memories of parties in 1980, for those who didn’t attend, you missed out big time, girls, more girls and more girls, cottesloe, scarborough beach and best yet…the Morley Park Hotel
Cheers, you made my night after a six pack…

  7. If there albums ever gets re-released I am interested. I tried ordering there albums through Weslet recods in Perth But was told they discontiuned then years ago. that was about 10 years ago now.Maybe we can email them and see if they are willing to make a small run? I don’t know.

  8. Ah finally! I rediscover this little lost gem from the golden age of Australian Pub Rock.

    Lovely memories.

I bought The Boys album on vinyl when it first came out but foolishly traded it in 15 years later when I got sick of carting my boxes of vinyl from share house to share house.

I saw The Boys in the summer of 81/82 at the Caringbah Inn when they were doing an east coast tour. They were on fire and it was one of those rare occasions of right sound, right place, right time.

I read that their first manager nicked off with their money and equipment when they first went east. Don’t know if that’s the source of the ongoing resentment.

Did they have the same management as The Choirboys? I have some vague memory of a connection there through Alberts and possibly working with Jim Manzie (ex ‘Ol 55) but I think the brain cells that held that info are now either gone or out of commission.

One final little yarn…a couple of years after seeing them live I was working in Mt Isa and a pommy guy I was working with had When You’re Lonely on a vinyl compilation album of new Australian bands that was released in the UK.

This song deserves to be commemorated as an Oz Rock classic.

  9. One of the greatest ever pub rock singles , i have it on tape still , but i need to find it on cd

  10. Great band. Great album. I have it on cd. For me these songs still hold up.

  11. Hi I was wondering where iu can get a copy of the first album of the Boys

  12. I covered this song in a covers band and an originals band. all my friends had the vinyl album (or tapings of it). Never came here to QLD as far as I know which was always a shame. We heard the original lead singer died in a car crash. Does anyone know if this is true? Also aren’t 2 of the members in or were in the Baby Animals? Only listened to the album the other day. We were drawn together by an understanding…………

  13. Original singer is alive and well and living in Perth. He’s drives a Taxi for a living now. Yes, 2 members went on to form the Baby Animals and are playing in a duo in some bars around Perth. One of the guitarists had an operation on his spine which has left him crippled and is in a wheelchair for life. You will be able to read all about it when I reissue the CD later in 2009.

  14. love everything the del roio’s do, keep doin wot come’s natural 2 u, which is ROCK……..

  15. new muzik coming, cant wait, im dying 4 the release of album, cam, tones, lino, u r ROCK GODS……..

  16. What a blast from the past. I remember first seeing this band on Countdown when I was living in Sydney. Went to every show in Sydney when they did their first East Coast tour. Shame they let Brent Lucanus go. He was not only hot but had that something that could have taken them to the top

  17. Hi, i loved the boys when i was in school, later in life i met him through friends at a gig and ended going out with him for 4 and hlf yrs, we split up after his operation, he loved me enough to leave me, he was the most beautiful man i have ever met, his brother cam was the same. cant wait till you re-issue the cd as i know alot of people that would like a copy, as we cant seem to find it anywhere. Thanx for your time

  18. The only copy we have of this song is on a stretched cassette tape, slowly dying from overuse…..

We still love the song, wanted to post here to say there are at least 2 CDs of this album we want to buy if we get the chance.

PLEASE RERELEASE THIS SO WE CAN BUY IT.

Im sure the lawyers can sort out who gets what percentage of the $2.50 royalties…. LOL

Failing rerelease on CD, an iTunes track we would buy too..
And in desperation, i guess we could cut a decent MP3 if we can source a near-mint vinyl copy.

  19. last reply didnt post for some reason.
to repeat: please re release this we will buy at least 2 copies

  20. First saw the Boys playing at the Dianella Hotel way back @ 1979/80.
Crowds were first initiallly small however word soon got out about this new wave band covering among other bands “The Angels “.
We used to have a beer with Brent Lucanus and the band during breaks and on occassion I would “do” the lights while they were playing if the regular guy was otherwise occupied.

They soon became big and were playing at more popular larger venues such as Morley Park Generator, Charles Hotel and the Overflow in Innaloo.

Went on to write their own material with some great songs being produced. I still have their releases in vinyl.

    Great memories

    Mike

  21. Hey, I think i still have the oiginal album on vinyl somewhere, I’ll have to check it out.

  22. I first heard brent and the boys whilst at hampton high and have not stopped listening Weekends were prebooked at the generator and i managed to pick up a copy of the album on cd a few years ago which gets thrashed at a popular spot in mandurah but im trying to find the first album released after Wayne Green joined. He was formally Wayne Green and the phantoms.Anyone out there able to help.

  23. I believe a bloke called Paul McCarthy, who later went on to play in an brillant Perth band called the Jackals actually wrote this song. Paul also wrote another classic pop song called “Hold On” which shamefully never got the release/exposure it deserved

    • He sure did. I also played with Paul McCarthy in a band, Cut n Run / Low dogs, we used to play at the Old Melbourne , City Hotel , Kambalda Hotel , Shenton Park.

The jackals were awesome, I have an album of theirs “Lucy’s falling backwards”, and some postcards for their album ” Pheal “.

What a rockin’ band they were. Used to support them at the Cave Bar in Freo….

    • You wouldn’t know where I could find Paul McCarthy, I would blow out to catch up with him.

Email, if you know how to contact him

      • I have his number but you can find him on Myspace.. just do a search on there and send him a message. Jackals where a great band and yes Paul is a great writer. Boys CD re-issue still in the works and almost done.. it’s a big job.

  24. the album is a classic, but wot about the b side to the singles, it dosen;t matter, comin home, cold mind, all gr8 songs that could of been singles…….. lastly the tuning and warming up b 4 gigs woz a show in itself. joe d

  25. Tell Brent I wanna chat with him about the band for the re-issue CD.
