Chalice ~ Overflow

chalice-45-cover.gif

Chalice were an English band that migrated to Perth, Western Australia in the early 70s and basically played covers of the day for a few years. After gathering a good fan base they moved to Sydney and recorded this one only album Produced by John English. Overflow is half originals and half cover versions including Seals and Crofts, Beach Boys and Mac Davis to name a few. The first single was the Beach Boys “Sail On Sailor” but is didn’t do very well with local radio picking up on the album track that I have featured here, an orignal called “In My World”. This track features a great Who sounding riff and the vocals are very reminicent of the Rubinoos, in fact if you didnt know who this was you would believe it was the Rubinoos. The album is patchy for the power pop collector and the song listed here is probably the best track on it. Still worth tracking down if you can find a copy. A classic lost power pop gem from 1975. enjoy

  1. whoa. My favourite so far. Like Mike Batt backed by Key or 10cc!!! This is really killer and the real deal as far as power pop goes.

  2. Do you know the names of the band members?
I think a freind of mine was in this band.

  3. The rip off riff sounds more like pinball wizard. I also understand the band went over to Abbey Road Studios to cut some tracks, not sure if they ever got released though.
A little more info on two of the members. Neil Scott & Les Brazil got back together in the late 80’s in a band called STEALERS. At the time they were one of the best cover bands in melbourne and looked likely to record & release an album until the day jobs took over once more. Les still managers Billy Hyde in Flemington & Neil is into theatre sound systems. I never got to see CHALICE but these two guys really new there stuff. AWESOME SOUND, AWESOME TALENT. Cheers, Boys

  4. I knew the band very well in Perth back in the mid 70s. Their names are George Heathcote, another George whose surname I can’t remember, Neil Scott, Les Brazil and Ian whose surname I also can’t remember.

  5. Les Brazil showed me your article yesterday and I thought I’d better add a bit of info for you. Les and I wrote “In my world” in 1972 before we came to Australia and as I was really into “The Who” at the time, I guess it is possible we sounded a bit like them. The original version, and far and away the best, was recorded at Srawberry Studios in Manchester[owned by 10cc] and released as a single on Clarion records in Perth and became our first minor hit and gave the band a lot of impetus. The album “Overflow” was recorded in Sydney with Jon English and Richard Lush in 2 weeks whilst gigging twice a night for the entire period! Ian Langford joined on drums and the band moved to Melbourne and became a very good live act , though still a covers band mainly. Our main claim to fame was our rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and playing it when Brian May and Roger Taylor were in the audience. The band folded in 1979 but Les and I got together again in 1986 in Stealers which in many ways was Chalice 10 years on! The original members of Chalice were as Sandy said with the other George being George Bunea and Ian Langford who replaced John Rimmer on drums. Many thanks to Terry and Collin for their comments on the band. Les and I are very proud of Chalice and Stealers and very happy that people remember our work.

  6. Hi everyone. Thanks for all the info and I look forward to tracking down any Stealers releases. I saw Chalice once or twice in Perth and was amazed at the great harmonies they had.

  7. Wow, memories of childhood in Oz in the 70’s, I now live in the UK. Saw Chalice many times at the Sunday session in pubs, kids were allowed there, and at various other gigs in and around Perth, WA. They were a great band and great muscians. I believe there may even be a copy of Overflow up in the loft, it’s probably worth something now?

  8. Hey Neil Scott. Can you contact me please? I need some info and some photo’s for an article.

  9. I remember Chalice very well back in the early 70’s when they played at the then, Kelmscott Hotel (Late 1973 to 1976) southeast of Perth. My father owned the hotel and I also worked there. Many a good Sunday afternoon session was entertained by this fantastic band.
I have a copy on plastic of Overflow still and in good condition. They were very good memories to me and I enjoyed their music so much. If only we could turn the clock back.
