The Innocents ~ Come Tonight
The Innocents started out as a band call Beathoven from Tasmania circa 1977 who had a minor hit with a single “Shy Girl” After a year of touring and little success they got dropped by there label and the band split, only drift into Sydney seperatley and meet up again to reform as The Innocents. In 1980, They got signed to RCA and released two singles “Sooner or Later” and “Come Tonight” which I have put up here. The band didn’t last out the year and members slowly drifted apart and went their seprate ways which is shame as they were a great little power pop band. Luckily for us, the band reformed for awhile in 2000 and re-issued all their recordings onto CD, including the Beathoven recordings. As for the original singles, they are very hard to find these days but worth tracking down if you can because power pop this good is worth it. Think Raspberries and The Rubinoos and you have The Innocents.

Strangely enough, their first single “Sooner or later/The b-side” issued in 1980 in Australia was released two years later in Japan with a PS!!

The only reasons the Innocents never made it big were lack of promotion and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. ‘Sooner or Later’ is one of the great pop songs of all time – and they had a number of other almost as good songs too. What happened to them is kind of like what happened to Big Star and The Shoes and many other great pop bands of that era.

Totally agree with Jim. It was a minor tragedy that they had such bad luck and were too ‘teen-oriented’ according to some record labels. They really had a knack for songwriting and obviously worked hard to sound as tight as they were live.

The single “Sooner Or Later” was produced by Jim Manzie, bass player and chief songwriter for Ol’55. Manzie went on to write film scores (mainly for horror movies) in America. But after Ol’55 he formed a power pop outfit called The Breakers (which may have featured some Innocents) they released an excellent single called “When I’m On TV” on the PowderWorks label in 1980. The b-side of that single “Lipstick and Leather” was co-written with the legendary Kim Fowley (The Runaways).
