Boys ~ Boys
On Sale soon~~~~ The Boys debut album from 1980. You can read about them in the blog below but I will only add that they went on to release a second album titled “Inside The Cage” with a new lead singer. If you are into power pop with a hint of punk rock, then stay away from that second LP as it leans very much into hard rock sound. You could basically say it’s a totally different band with a new direction, it does nothing to these ears. This album however is pretty cool power pop rock with a punk edge and worth a listen. I have secured the rights to re-issue this on CD with bonus tracks. Keep an eye out at my labels website at www.zerohourrecords.com.au
City: Perth

Legend Band and one of the best classic OZ rock cd’s that never managed to make it outside of WA. Just simple bad marketing, otherwise the story would have been totally different for Lukanis and The Boys.

Great site you have here

Hi!
Thanx for this amazing download. I’m from Poland and I heard first time Boys about 15 years ago. Unfortunatelly from crappy vinyl – I never heard last song. Condition of this LP was really terrible.
I never heard about Boys’ CD. Maybe you know where I can get it???
If you don’t know, maybe you can download back cover and booklet????
Best regards.
.

Or keep an eye on my record label site. http://www.zerohourrecords.com.au

While i am asking, does anyone out there happen to have “Bang The Drum’s” self titled album from 1990? Been looking for this one as well. 2 Hits were only you & passion.

Bass player or drummer or both ended up in Baby Animals. This is one of THE albums of my youth. Does anyone know what happened to the singer, or the bloke that wrote all these great songs? Paul Mcarthy or macartney or sumpin?

Any chance you can burn me a copy of the BOYS CD or know where I can get a copy?
I absolutely LOVE IT & used to have on vinyl
They had a residency at the Caringbah inn in Sydney on Thursday nights for a while & I saw them play live several times. Sensational light show & syncing with the drums. Great ACDC covers too.
Email me with response. Thanks

freo boy - November 23, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Whatever happened to the original lead singer?
freo boy - November 23, 2008 at 7:30 pm
He’s a Taxi driver in Perth. So you might have been in a Taxi with him an not known. He has no interest in the music scene or the Boys which is a shame as I’m sure he would have some stories to tell.

I have this album on vinyl in sweet, pristine condition. I bought it when I was a teenager and just loved it.
Paul McCarthy is still around, I see him now and then at gigs and it’s great to see he’s still involved in the Perth music scene. He was, is an amazing lyricist.

Loved this album in my youth and managed to get a download – ah the memories.
Does anyone remember a band Strange Daze. They released a tape which I loved and lost. Would love to hear it again

WELL FINALY!!! Someone out there knew the west Australian band BOYS.
I have both albums BOYS-boys and INSIDE THE CAGE.
Now the debut album was great, with its new wave rock influence, around the time of the album there were heaps of pub bands with a similar sound some went on to bigger things e.g. the radiators matt finish, my sex just to name a few. But this band (boys) had something different with Brent lucanus on vox and the del Rio brothers on lead and rhythm guitar.
How this band didn’t go on to bigger things and become an Australian household name is beyond me.
Now the new band with tobruk as the front man was a completely different sound, the INSIDE THE CAGE album released 1982 (funny enough under the PAROL label.
Rumors are that tobruk did some time in jail hence the name of the album INSID THE CAGE.
The new sound was cross between early ACDC with a touch of rose tattoo, a little steavy write and just a dab of the old boys sound.
As in the debut album the harmonies are great but not as well composed. Personally I think the first album is my favorite, but in saying that the second album had the raw grunt the first album lacked. tobruk’s voice is completely different to lucanus, tobruk had a very dry and gravally voice where lucanas sounded like a teenage pommy boy. Inside the cage also has a Vander and young cover on the last track called Sorry.
In the end no matter what you think of the first or second album just remember its still OZROCK and that says it all.
Cheers Roy

I loved the boys, would like a copy of both cds/ records/tapes if you have them. ta
charmen - March 17, 2009 at 12:06 am
I too am a HUGE BOYS fan and do have both releases on both Vinyl & CD… I grew up with both albums and the first is my far superior choice but have no problems spinning Inside the Cage time and time over again… BRILLIANT AUSSY ROCK and it is just a shame that this Band did not become as big as The Angels ort Hoodoo Gurus… ROCK ON…
UNJAY - March 19, 2009 at 9:42 am
Sorry guys just a correction on my behalf, in the last message left I refer to the second front man as tobruk…….. My bad, tobruk actually wrote a heap of the boy’s songs on both albums.
The correct name of the front man on the inside the cage album was Wayne green. Sorry about the misleading information.
Be safe, rock on rock hard
Cheers Roy

Who the hell is Tobruk??? The actual writer for all the Boys songs was a guy called Paul McCarthy. He wrote all the songs and the music but decided to give the band some credits otherwise it would have seemed like a “Manufactured Band”. Check the album cover and you will see it says McCarthy/Boys for song writing credits although Paul wrote them 100% himself. Not sure about the second album because I don’t have an actual cover to read and Maybe this Tobruk fellow is on there. Shine On
powerpop - March 21, 2009 at 12:06 pm
i actually dont know who toburk is but on the inside the cage album on cd only, not on the tape his /her name is next to 6 or 7 songs along with mcarthy and del roio.
if any one can find out who toburk is i wold love to know.
rock on powerpop be safe,
cheers ozrock

Saw these guys about the time of the second album when they were the support act for The Kinks 1982 Australian tour. The first album and three singles were what counted though. Got them all on vinyl plus the CD of the album. I always thought they sounded a bit like Shoes – heavy power guitar under pop vocals.
